The 1997-99 home shirt has the classic simplicity of narrow black and white stripes with black edged white hoops on the cuffs and crew neck and centralised gold logo, crest and sponsorship. Alan Shearer was injured for half the season, but manager Kenny Dalgleish supplemented the strike force with John Barnes and Ian Rush, though his style of football was more cautious than his predecessor, Kevin Keegan, and he was replaced the following season by Ruud Gullit. The highlight of 1997-98 was the run in the Champions League, including beating Barcelona 3-2 with a Faustino Asprilla hat-trick, and Newcastle also reached the FA Cup Final only to lose 2-0 to Arsenal.
